Butt-Slapping

In the homophobic sports world, the body practice of butt-slapping is strangely quite common and acceptable. It can be used to mean a lot of things, from "good job" to "you'll get 'em next time" to "time to get fired up" and everything in between. In the preceding video you can see Percy Harvin give his coach a big congratulatory slap as they're about to win the game.

One would think that a bunch of men would be averse to touching each others butts (why butts are taboo is probably a topic for a whole new discussion) in this manner but instead it has become a common practice. I attempted to find the origins of the butt slap but my google searches all came back with the same "no one knows how or why this started." I find it interesting however that this practices continues on simply because of praxis. No one seems to know why and it has no inherent meaning but culture has shaped the butt slap in sports to be an acceptable form of acknowledgement.
