To Produce or Not to Produce?

In our society it has become the norm to have a small family. This small family consists of a father, mother, and about two-four children. You rarely see a family that has more than four children. However, there is one family that has nineteen children and one more on the way. This family is the Duggars from the show on TLC. The Duggars are extremely conservative Christians. Due to their faith Michelle, the mom, has never used birth control. In our society most of the female population takes birth control. A lot of people criticize the Duggar family for their choice to not use birth control. They say that we are already an overpopulated nation where it’s a fight to find a job. Now on the other side of this spectrum are people who use birth control and even somewhat abuse it. In the Chinese culture there is the one-child policy. This policy consists of limiting a minority in the population to only have one child. The policy causes several problems though. Many people have abortions if their unborn child is a girl because Chinese families value boys more than girls.

It is important to bridge the gap between these two styles of life because we need to find a happy medium. Both sides have consequences that affect their lives. In the Duggars’ case the harsh reality that some of their children will be unable to find jobs is highly likely. For the Chinese the one-child policy causes many women to have abortions which are unsafe and it prevents parents from having more than one child to take care of them when they are older. However, it is important to understand that there are a variety of faiths/beliefs in our nation which cause diversity in our families and life styles.
