The scene that I chose was the scene where Jake first has is Avitar body. He wakes up on a gurney, and almost immediately begins to move around. He quickly becomes acclimated to his new body, ignoring the doctors’ advice to lay back down on the gurney and to take it slow. He breaks away from the equipment and runs outside, ignoring everyone who tells him to stop. Near the end of the scene, he digs his feet into the dirt, a clear sign that he feels liberated by his new freedom.
This scene is trying to make the viewers understand what Jake is feeling as an Avitar, especially at this point in the movie. Jake is exploring the new feeling of freedom, because before becoming an Avitar, he was confined to a wheelchair. This is done through his curious examination of his fingers and the small detail of him wiggling his toes. In addition, his freedom is expressed through him running out of the laboratory through the grounds. His excitement can clearly be seen in his eyes, as well as through his exuberant movements. Another important point that this scene makes is that it continues to show us Jake’s personality. Jake doesn’t like for people to tell him what to do, as seen in this scene, and in the scene before he first goes to Pandora, among others. Jake is rebellious and curious. He almost immediately runs out to explore the area, and himself. He disregards the lab workers advice to slow down, and just does his own thing. This attitude continues to shine through later in the movie when he stops reporting to Quaritch and ‘switches sides’.
In my opinion, this scene makes the viewers become fans of Jake’s character. They see him running free and appearing to be happy. We are already aware of his struggles before becoming an Avitar, so we want him to do well and be happy. While, in my opinion, this movie is far from plausible, as a viewer, I get dragged into it and want everything to work out perfectly for the characters, regardless of how unrealistic the outcomes are. This scene is what ties together the information to what they want you to believe. We know the basic details, and now we (or at least I as a viewer), know that we want Jake to succeed in his mission. This scene pulls the viewers into the movie, to the point where you cannot turn it off. You know and understand too much about the characters to turn away.
Like you said, this scene pulls the viewer into the movie. Just as Jake is being introduced to his avatar, so are we. We watch him explore his new body and its abilities. We see how excited he is to be able to walk/run again. Jake as an avatar becomes real to us in this scene and creates an emotional connection between the viewer and the avatar.
